Reporting to the Supervisor, Roads and Services, this position is responsible for maintaining the Town’s infrastructure through the performance of a variety of labour activities, including but not limited to: winter maintenance, underground infrastructure utility locates, and maintenance of equipment, roads, linear assets (water, sanitary and storm infrastructure), cemeteries, buildings and grounds.
The primary responsibilities for this position include (but not limited to) the following:
- Ensure the proper functioning, operation and maintenance of the Water Distribution Subsystem and the Wastewater Collection Facility, within permitted MECP Certification Class requirements.
- Assist with operations at the Elevated Water Tower and Wastewater Pumping Stations, on an emergency basis or as required, within permitted MECP Certification requirements.
- Carry out regular duties including, but not limited to the following, as permitted by MECP Certification Class requirements:
- Ensure proper monitoring, inspections, evaluations and adjustments are properly recorded.
- Installation and maintenance of water distribution and wastewater collection infrastructure in accordance with all applicable regulations and legislation.
- Manual labour.
- Coordinate and perform utility locates for municipal infrastructure (including watermains, sewers, streetlights, etc.), process locate requests in accordance with the Ontario One Call system requirements, and the Ontario Underground Infrastructure Notification System Act.
- Installation, maintenance and or operation of Storm water and drainage facilities (storm sewers, storm water management ponds, culverts, ditches, etc.).
- Maintenance of municipal cemeteries (ground maintenance, opening and closing of graves).
- Operate and maintain equipment, machinery and tools (loader, backhoe, tractor, dump/sand/plow trucks, etc.).
- Operate winter maintenance equipment for snow plowing, sanding, salting, and snow removal.
- Maintenance of roadways (road surface, sidewalks, boulevards, curbs, lighting, signage).
- Installation and maintenance of water meters.
- Data entry, record keeping and complete reports as necessary.
- Work in conjunction with various departments and ministries.
- Assist in addressing public inquiries, concerns, requests and complaints, as required.
The successful candidate will have as a minimum the following qualifications:
- High School Diploma or equivalent.
- Experience in the operation and maintenance of heavy equipment and machinery (minimum one year).
- Possess and maintain a class “D” Ontario Driver’s License with a “Z” endorsement.
- Ability to obtain and maintain MECP Operator Class I Certification for Municipal Residential Water Distribution Subsystem.
- Ability to obtain and maintain MECP Operator Class II Certification for Municipal Wastewater Collection Facility.
- Ability to obtain and maintain Water Meter Installer – 800A apprenticeship program
- Applied knowledge of water distribution and wastewater collection systems considered an asset.
- Applied knowledge of practices and methods applicable to civil construction and construction materials and their use considered an asset.
- Knowledge of the hazards and safety requirements of the job.
- Thorough knowledge and understanding of the Ontario Occupational Health and Safety Act, WHMIS, and other relevant regulatory and legislative acts related to water and wastewater operations and maintenance.
- Ability to operate and maintain heavy equipment including backhoe, loader, dump truck, etc.
- Must be physically fit and capable of performing heavy physical labour at various job locations.
- Ability to work in extreme weather conditions.
- Ability to follow specific instructions.
- Willingness to participate in the continuous development of skills and knowledge related to the industry and successfully complete all training associated with the position on an ongoing basis.
- Demonstrate excellent communication skills when dealing with co-workers and the public.
- Ability to respond within 30 minutes to call out when on standby.
- Ability to work extended hours as required.
