Hours: 70 hours per two-week period
Reporting to the Aquatic and Facility Services Supervisor, the Aquatics Instructor is responsible for the safe delivery of aquatic programs offered by the Town, including swimming lessons and public swims.
The primary responsibilities for this position include (but not limited to) the following:
- Ensure the proper lifeguarding responsibilities and duties while patrons are attending public access swimming programs.
- Ensure proper operation of the Swimming Pool as per Renfrew County Health Unit and Province of Ontario Regulations.
- Assume all instructional responsibilities and duties for any and all registered instructional programs from infants to seniors.
- Assume all responsibilities and duties for the instruction of safe and balanced aquafitness classes or any type of exercise program in the pool environment.
- Responsible for performing daily/nightly maintenance in and around the pool and the change rooms. When working an opening shift, responsible for ensuring the maintenance has been performed the previous evening and the pool is prepared for opening programs.
- Responsible for establishing an ongoing professional relationship with patrons and volunteers ensuring everyone has an enjoyable and positive experience and are safe while attending the Nick Smith Centre or Beach.
- During the annual pool maintenance (usually September of each year) responsible for light maintenance and refurbishment duties such as painting and cleaning.
- Responsible for program-related administrative duties including registrations, program bookings, answering phone enquiries.
- Protect own health and health of others by adopting safe work practices, reporting unsafe conditions immediately, attending all relevant training regarding occupational health and safety.
- Assist in training other employees.
- Carry out other duties as assigned by the Aquatic and Facility Services Supervisor.
The successful candidate will have as a minimum the following qualifications:
- Completion of Grade 12
- National Lifeguard (NL) Certification
- Lifesaving Society Swim Instructor (LSSI) Certification
- Current First Aid and CPR level C-AED Certification
- Aqua fitness Instructor Certification (CALA, YMCA or equivalent)
- Ability to obtain a satisfactory Vulnerable Sector Background Check (Criminal Record Check).
- Six (6) months previous experience instructing and delivering aquatics programs and/or working with children and youth in a pool setting.
- Previous experience providing customer service and/or with handling cash.
- Applied knowledge of annual Pool Maintenance and Operation
- Applied knowledge of Beach set up, operation and safety.
- Knowledgeable of the hazards and safety requirements of the job
- Thorough knowledge and understanding of the Ontario Occupational Health and Safety Act, WHMIS and other relevant regulatory and legislative acts related to pools and public beaches.
- Proficient understanding of lifeguarding, swimming instruction, and emergency procedures of First Aid and CPR level C-AED
- Knowledge of principles for providing customer service to meet quality standards.
- Familiar with methods for designing lesson plans and providing instruction to accommodate individuals at all ages.
- Possess strong administration and record keeping skills.
- Must be physically fit, alert and capable of following instructions with minimum supervision and with a high sense of responsibility.
- Ability to listen and understand directives in order to carry out tasks as expected and independently.
- Provide leadership and operational direction.
- Capable of demonstrating strong customer service, communication, and interpersonal skills
- Ability to work within a team environment.
- Ability to maintain required certifications, and continue to develop skills and knowledge related to the position.
- Capable of maintaining a polite, helpful demeanour at all times when dealing with the general public and volunteers.
Assets:
- Knowledge of specialized software programs such as FileHold, Xplor Recreation (or equivalent)
- Valid class “G” driver’s license
