The Town has begun spraying for cosmetic weed control purposes in Town parks, green spaces and along sidewalks. The Town is committed to only using eco-friendly alternatives when cosmetic weed control is required.
The product being used to control weed growth on the Town’s sidewalks is a vinegar-based herbicide product called Munger Horticultural Vinegar Plus. The active ingredient is acetic acid (vinegar). This product is listed on the Ministry of the Environment’s List of Active Ingredients Authorized for Cosmetic Uses (Allowable List) which have a low risk of harming people, pets, or the environment. This product is safe for people and pets as soon as it dries.
The product that is used within select park lawns is called Fiesta and the active ingredient in the product is iron, a common element which is safely present in many everyday items. Again, this product is listed by the Ministry of the Environment as being safe for people and pets as soon as it dries.
The products being used by the Town were specifically selected because they are known to be very low risk. The Ontario government is very restrictive of what products can be used for cosmetic weed and pest control. Both of these products are officially permitted for use in Ontario to control weeds for cosmetic purposes.
