To minimize the risk of fire and burn injury, the Arnprior Fire Department does not recommend family fireworks or informal neighbourhood displays. We recommend attending public fireworks displays hosted by your municipality or other responsible organizations.

 

If you do still choose to have a family or an informal neighbourhood firework display, check with your local municipality about regulations regarding fireworks. 

 

Here are some important safety tips to be followed: 

 

• Appoint a responsible person to be in charge. Only adults who are aware of the hazards and essential safety precautions should handle and discharge fireworks.
• Carefully read and follow the label directions on fireworks packaging.
• Always keep a water hose or pail of water close by when discharging fireworks.
• Discharge fireworks well away from combustible materials like buildings, trees, and dry grass.
• Keep onlookers a safe distance away, upwind from the area where fireworks are discharged.
• Light only one firework at a time and only when they are on the ground. Never try to light a firework in your hand or re-light dud fireworks. For dud fireworks, it is best to wait 30 minutes and soak them in a bucket of water. Dispose of them in a metal container.
• Discharge fireworks only if wind conditions do not create a safety hazard.
• Keep sparklers away from children. Sparklers burn extremely hot and can ignite clothing, cause blindness and result in severe burns. As the sparkler wire remains hot for some minutes after burnout, it should be immediately soaked in water to avoid injury.
• If someone gets burned, run cool water over the wound for three to five minutes and seek medical attention, if necessary.

Boating Safety

This past weekend, The Town of Arnprior trained and certified 12 of their aquatic team in National Lifeguard – Waterfront. During this 20-hour course the staff developed a sound understanding of lifeguarding principles, good judgment, and a mature and responsible attitude towards their waterfront role. The training emphasizes prevention and effective rescue response in emergencies including first aid treatment. Staff developed additional teamwork, leadership, and communication skills. Fitness requirements include a timed 300 m run-swim-tow and a 50 m swim wearing fins.

Robert Simpson Park Beach is open and lifeguarded daily Monday to Friday from 11:00am-6:00pm.

• Children under five, young men and older adults have the highest drowning risk
• Teenage brains can encourage risk-taking behaviour
• Drowning can occur in is little as a few centimetres of water
• Drowning is fast and silent

• Stay On Guard! Supervision of children and non-swimmers is key
• Always swim with a buddy
• Only swim between sunrise and before dawn
• Wear a lifejacket or PFD with a label that says the device has been approved by Transport Canada

• Swim in lifeguarded areas (only inside the buoy lines)

• DO NOT swim along the Madawaska River side of Robert Simpson Park waterfront, there is a dangerous and strong undertow
• Stay within arms' reach of children under five
• Alcohol and water don't mix. Don't drink and swim.

• Obey all instructions and directions of the lifeguard
