Message from the Mayor

Hello Arnprior,

The Town recently lost the most committed community member that I have ever had the privilege to call my friend, Glenn Arthur. As the former Recreation Director for 35 years, along with being an avid volunteer, I cannot imagine what Arnprior would look like today without the dedication and commitment he gave to everything he did as an employee, and as a volunteer.

It truly is the members that make the community and I hope we can all learn the valuable lesson Glenn taught us of being actively involved in your community. There are so many ways to be involved, from attending events, volunteering in the community, participating in open houses and surveys, all which help make the community you live in a better place to be.

This spring I hope you take advantage of all that the Town of Arnprior has to offer, from participating in events such as Pitch in Week (pg. 6), making sure your family is safe and prepared for any emergency (pg. 10), or taking up a new activity with one of the many recreation programs we offer (pg. 3-5).

Don’t forget to mark your calendar for the start of our Summer events with our kick-off event Priorpalooza on June 1st and the return of the Arnprior Market on June 2nd!

Winter parking restrictions (2 am - 7 am) remain in place until March 31st, 2024. The Town would like to thank residents for adhering to winter parking restrictions which has allowed the Town to properly maintain the safety of our roadways throughout the winter season.

Are you Moving?

Avoid being billed for water you did not consume! Complete the open or close an account form as soon as your closing date has been confirmed if you are moving in or out of a property with municipal water services. Find the form at www.arnprior.ca/waterbills

Everyone should be alert while approaching crosswalks and always follow road signage and the directions of crossing guards, by-law enforcement officers and other law enforcement personnel. Please be respectful to crossing guards who are solely responsible for the safe movement of pedestrians across the crosswalk.

Aquatic Admission Standards apply to all swims and pool rentals.

It is possible that the water may appear slightly discoloured within the area being flushed. If discoloured water is detected, please open your COLD water taps and allow the water to run for at least 5 minutes, or until water is clear. The coloured water is not hazardous to health. Adding a Secondary Dwelling Unit

Here are some general requirements for secondary dwelling units:

• Each accessory dwelling unit must be less than 40% of the area of the principal dwelling (excluding unfinished basement areas or garage)

• Required parking minimums are 2 parking spaces for the main detached dwelling unit, plus one space for each accessory dwelling unit.

• You may need to contact a BCIN Designer or Architect/Engineer to assist with the required documents & drawings to obtain a Building Permit

• Additional provisions including setbacks to lot lines and rules for accessory dwelling units are zone specific.

Bursary Program

The Town of Arnprior Secondary School Bursary Program recognizes eligible secondary school students, residing in the Town of Arnprior, who are working towards successful completion of their Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD) and are continuing with postsecondary education. These bursaries are awarded by the Town of Arnprior to recognize outstanding students, in good standing, whose post-secondary education will allow them to consider a future career in a field related to municipal government.

72 hours - Is your family prepared?

Why 72 hours?

Experience has shown that it can take 72 hours or more to mobilize a significant relief effort during an emergency. The 72 hour preparedness message is commonly used across North America by first responders (fire, police, and paramedics), governments and relief organizations. Canadians are encouraged to be prepared to cope on their own for at least the first 72 hours – that’s 3 days – of an emergency. This lets emergency workers focus on people in urgent need. To support their efforts, the rest of us need to be prepared to look after ourselves.

Why prepare your family?

While governments at all levels are working hard to keep Canada safe, individuals also have an important role to play in emergency preparedness. By being prepared to take care of yourself, you allow community resources to be used more effectively during an emergency – and you help keep your own family safe too. Simply put, emergency preparedness begins at home.

Start today. Prepare your emergency kit so you are ready to take care of yourself and your loved ones for at least 72 hours.

Smoke and Carbon Monoxide Alarms - It’s the Law

Every home in Ontario must have a working smoke alarm on every storey and outside all sleeping areas.

Every home in Ontario with a fuel-burning appliance, fireplace or attached garage must have a working carbon monoxide alarm installed adjacent to each sleeping area.

1. Homeowners: It is the responsibility of homeowners to install and maintain smoke alarms on every storey of their home and outside sleeping areas and carbon monoxide alarms (if required) adjacent to each sleeping area in the home.

2. Landlords: It is the responsibility of landlords to ensure their rental properties comply with the law.

3. Tenants: If you are a tenant of a rental property and do not have the required number of smoke or carbon monoxide alarms, contact your landlord immediately. It is against the law for tenants to remove the batteries, disable or tamper with smoke or carbon monoxide alarms in any way.

The Arnprior Fire Department can issue Provincial Offences Tickets to any individual that fails to comply with the Ontario Fire Code!

Offence Fines

Failure to install smoke or carbon monoxide alarm: $360.00 Failure to maintain alarms in operating conditions: $360.00

Intentionally disable a smoke or carbon monoxide alarm: $360.00 Replace alarms with reduced level of protection: $360.00

Fines can reach up to $50,000 for individuals or $100,000 for corporations.

Open Air Burning

Open Air Burning is regulated in the Town of Arnprior and a permit is required before any burning takes place. In order to receive a “Permit To Burn”, a resident would be required to review Municipal By-Law No. 6974-19. Provided the resident is able to meet all of the provisions of By-Law No. 6974-19, they can apply for an Open Air Burning Permit.

The Open Air Burning Permit process has moved to a new online portal in 2024.

Note: Tenants must provide written consent from their current property owners through the BurnPermit system. A valid email address for the property owner is required. Those property owners without email addresses can reach out to the Arnprior Fire Department by telephone at (613) 623-4231 ext. 2 to be issued their open air burning permit.

Please remember to be considerate of your neighbours and the community around you. Be diligent and protect other properties from by-products of combustion such as nuisance smoke and sparks.

Should a complaint be received regarding open air burning, a Fire Official or a Fire Crew will respond to inspect the burning conditions. If you are found to be violating the terms of By-law 6974-19, the fire will be extinguished and you may be subject to fines.
